Located on the corner of Alice Street and Edward Street, Restaurant II can be easy to miss if you don't already know it is there. Those in the know go for the restaurant's reputation and return for the excellent quality and innovative flavour combinations.
Upon entering, visitors walk into a foyer area with a tiered dining area and bar. The interior is sleek and well appointed, with bookshelves lining the back walls and windows overlooking Alice Street and the Botanical Gardens. The tables are decked out with crisp white tablecloths and are spaced far enough from each other for diners' conversations to remain private.
Restaurant II's owner and head chef, David Pugh, creates a new menu each month according to produce quality and availability. Most main meals are priced between $35 and $45, and dishes may contain anything from onion rings, to flowers, to venison, to tomato snow and much more. What is always consistent, however, is the quality of the dishes. Presented beautifully, you may have a hard time disturbing the picture by actually eating the food. If you want to try a bit of everything and have a few hours to fill, the degustation menu with matched wines is well worth considering; just ensure your order is placed by 12:30pm for lunch or 8pm for dinner.
Whatever you do, leave room for dessert. The sweets menu showcases a beautiful range of flavours, often presented in deconstructed format. The wine list is vast, with bottle prices ranging from around $50 to $800. The staff are extremely efficient and polite, and are happy to help with your food and wine selections if needed.
