Among all of the brand new food and drink venues popping up in Brisbane, it can be easy to overlook some of the mainstays: the institutions of Brisbane wining and dining. Italian restaurant Il Centro, opened by Andy and Marcia Georges in 1992, is one of those mainstays. Located on the prestigious Eagle Street Pier and with spectacular river views, the price is high and the quality is excellent.
A favourite destination for long business lunches and client dinners, Il Centro caters to diners with an appreciation for traditional service. Old fashioned hospitality shines through in everything from the table settings to the wait staff uniforms to the menu. Don't be intimidated by the tongue-tangling Italian names of the menu items - a brief explanation is provided under each for the sake of the unilingual.
Executive Chef Catherine Anders' creations combine the classic Italian influence with the freshest and highest quality Queensland produce, seafood and meats to please all tastes. To start, the sourdough loaf with olive oil and green olives is rustic and hearty, while the fresh flavours of the 'salmone fatti in casa con cannelloni di gambri e asparagus e salsa al zafferano', or house cured salmon with tiger prawn cannelloni, new season asparagus and saffron sauce, will kick your tastebuds into overdrive.
It would be difficult to visit Il Centro without sampling the famous sand crab lasagne (lasagne alla granseola), available in entree or main size. This is a dish that really packs a punch, so if your meal includes a starter and/or sides, you may find that the entree size will suffice. The lasagne arrives in a pool of creamed crustacean sauce so deliciously rich it could be mistaken for a dessert. The lasagne itself is flavoursome and moreish, and who can resist a side of duck fat potatoes to complete the picture? To finish off, the cold set chocolate tart with honey and macadamia gelato and cocoa sauce is an exercise in indulgence. Any questions about the menu or the wine list can be capably answered by your waitperson.
