In recent years Eagle Street Pier has gone from being a tired and forgotten corner of Brisbane City to a bustling bar and restaurant precinct. The newest addition to the Eagle Street stable is Pony.
With restaurants already established at The Rocks and Neutral Bay in Sydney, this latest incarnation has been brought to life in the prime upper level of Eagle Street Pier just a few paces from Bavarian Bier Café and Saké. The well placed balcony seating boasts a beautiful view of the Brisbane River and Story Bridge, while the main restaurant space overlooks Brisbane City.
But Pony has more to offer than just stunning views. The menu is based around honest, flavoursome food treated with respect. The most popular starter menu item is a grilled flatbread with smoky eggplant and white bean dip, a dish that has been served since Pony’s inception and still satisfies.
Main dishes include the usual fish, chicken, and red meat options as well as share dishes like a coal pit roast, slow cooked over six hours. Vegetarian dishes are also available and include a roast vegetable salad and spinach and potato gnocchi. Try the date brulee tart for something sweet at the end of your meal; this is a dessert you won’t forget in a hurry. If you’re not such a sweet tooth, decadent cheese platters might be the choice for you.
The dining space is dark and rustic. The candlelight, exposed bricks and pipes, simple wooden tables, and wine storage units in the middle of the room make the room feel intimate despite the buzzing city just outside the window.
Pony is heavily booked most nights, so remember to make a reservation to avoid disappointment.
