Situated on the upper end of Boundary Street in West End is one of Brisbane’s most versatile venues. The folks at Lock ‘n’ Load can whip up a seriously satisfying meal, crank out some excellent live music, pour you a delicious beer and make you a mean cocktail. In this instance we are going to be talking about breakfast. The frontage of Lock ‘n’ Load is narrow but it leads out to a glorious garden escape full of oxygen-providing greenery and sun-smart shade. It is the perfect place to enjoy your weekend breakfast with the relaxed vibe and chilled (but efficient) staff. Their menu options would be best described as classic Australian with a twist using seasonal produce. I chose the blistered tomatoes, Gympie goats chevre, avocado, lemon oil and sourdough (of course, with a side of bacon). Not only was this beautifully presented, but also it was absolutely delicious. The chevre was soft and tart and was complemented by the creamy avocado, juicy tomatoes and the salty bacon. It was a (sort of) healthy and fulfilling start to the day. My eating partner chose eggs Benedict that came with spinach and bacon. He didn’t say a word to me until he finished his meal. I think that means it was OK. To drink I had a mixed berry and mint frappe which was perfectly satisfying on a hot spring morning. I was very tempted by the list of breakfast cocktails – an Earl Grey Martini, Espresso Martini, Breakfast Martini and Good Morning Bellini, but I wanted to stay awake for the rest of the day so opted out. Lock ‘n’ Load would be perfect for a brunch before the races or any other daytime event where morning drinks are a necessity (hens party?). The staff manage to keep it at a relaxed and pleasant vibe day and night, and it is a great place to pop in and visit for any occasion.
