In the first week of June, Brisbane's first ever paleo restaurant opened its doors. In strict keeping with the paleo diet, Primal Pantry serves only organic produce, 100 percent grass fed meat, no refined sugar, no grains, no processed oils and next to no dairy. Mercifully their baristas allow customers the option of cow's milk (instead of coconut or almond) in their coffee, but that is their only non-paleo concession.
You may be overjoyed, repelled or intrigued by the idea of a dedicated paleo cafe. To even the non-paleo, however, the menu looks pretty all right. Some dishes like the pulled pork with sweet potato hash, spinach and eggs, or the cinnamon pancakes with grilled figs, pistachio crumb and maple even sound quite decadent. Unfortunately, the lure of these two meals seems to be felt by many, and on our Saturday morning trip, both had run out.
The food is very simple and as you would expect, very wholesome. Followers of the paleo lifestyle will be overjoyed to find a cafe (with onsite grocer) that caters to their dietary needs. Those with food sensitivities and the health conscious will also most likely find a lot to enjoy.
Open for breakfast and lunch (with separate menus for each) Primal Pantry's first weekend morning of business certainly pulled a crowd. Despite generous seating, there was a line-up outside the door. Despite a few opening week kinks, and given that this is the only restaurant of its kind in Brisbane, the popularity of this innovative establishment is unlikely to diminish.
