musicThe Kills

Monday, 25th July - 8PM - Tuesday, 26th July - 8PM
@ The Metro

The Kills have all the components of an authentic East London indie/garage-punk/battery-acid blues duo pretty much covered, including a story of meeting in a hotel room and early record sleeves shot in photo booths rather than with a professional camera. As of two weeks ago they even have an ex-cocaine addict supermodel closely associated with the band. They're also rather good at performing. Now on their fourth album, frontwoman Alison Mosshart's raw vivacity is still as visceral as guitarist Jamie Hince's effortless cool is, well, effortless and cool. Her renewed stage energy could be attributed to the fact that Mosshart has just completed a two-album stint at the front of Jack White's The Dead Weather. This week, the duo are set to fire up Sydney crowds at the Metro with their thrashing sounds and extreme level of coolness.

If you're heading to the movies without a picnic blanket this summer, you're doing it wrong. Moonlight Cinema is back for its sixth season this year to prove that movies are better when you're watching them outdoors, and best when you can bring your own food and booze without being super sneaky. The season kicks off with a preview screening of Alexander Payne's comedy-drama The Descendents, while the rest of the cinematic lineup includes Woody Allen's romantic comedy Midnight in Paris, the 2011 remake of The Muppets and the Hollywood neo-noir drama that cemented Ryan Gosling's rank as the tenth sexiest man alive — claim your patch of grass early for Drive. Also on offer will be NY-style street food, a fully licensed bar and gourmet picnic hampers you can book along with your tickets. Though the best way to do Moonlight is still with a bag of Cheezels and a bottle of wine.

Flickerfest began as a small local festival at the Balmain High School in 1991 and has now put roots down on the shore of Bondi Beach, as if that part of town needed another reason to pilfer the masses during the summer months. Freeing filmmakers from the pressures of box office and commercial concerns, the festival acts as a launch pad for emerging storytellers and their bold new perspectives on cinema.
