Late in 2010 Canvas burst onto the small bar scene with it's avant garde menu, popular location and laid back staff. Since then the bar has grown from strength to strength, nabbing a few bar awards and gaining a loyal following along the way. But what makes Canvas such a great bar? We made the tiresome trip to find out for ourselves. And yes we do love our job.
Another addition to Woolloongabba's trendy antique precinct, Canvas's arty appeal suits the neighbourhood perfectly. The heritage building's original boarded ceiling is still in tact, while the walls are covered in whimsical graffiti and floors decorated with old fringed lamps. It is a small bar so there's not a lot of seating if you have a big group. Shabby chic chairs and Chesterfield loungers are scattered towards the front end of the bar and there are cushioned booths up the back that can squeeze a group in. But this bar isn't made for large groups and lots of noise. It's a place to come for a quiet drink, and believe me the drinks are enough to keep you interested.
While there is a good range of wines and boutique beers on offer, a trip to Canvas requires you to try a cocktail. In fact its a must. One look at the cocktail menu's ingredients and you'll know this bar means business. Truffle honey syrup, fig foam, coconut water syrup - nothing seems to obscure for the bar, and the friendly drink staff are happy to explain each cocktail's flavours and what would suit your palette best.
The grazing menu is also a wonderful exercise in gourmet nibbles. Your pick of cheeses, meats and antipasto comes served on a chic timber block too. It's these decadent details, combined with a non-pretentious vibe that gives this boutique bar the reputation it deserves.
