There may not be a sign over the door, but most Brisbane restaurant-goers know where to find Garuva Hidden Tranquility Restaurant and Bar. Through a narrow doorway on Wickham Street, down a green-hued and tree-lined path lies a rabbit warren of curtained dining areas. Venture a little further and you’ll find a dimly lit cocktail bar furnished with plump couches and floor cushions.
Tranquility may be the illusion, but it’s noise and energy that you’ll find in the restaurant. A constant buzz of chatter fills all corners of the space, and wait staff hurry from dining area to dining area with steaming meals and fantabulous cocktails. Four walls of curtain, ensuring privacy for all parties, conceal each floor level table (insider’s tip: this is an excellent place for a date if you want to ensure all of your companion’s attention remains on you). Diners are seated on floor cushions to enjoy the Asian fusion menu and an extensive range of beverages.
Start with Garuva’s trademark cob loaf with baba ganoush, and grab a few main meals to share with your fellow guests. If your energy levels leave something to be desired, an espresso martini will give you a kick in the right direction.
After dinner (and perhaps dessert) is done, take your party into the cocktail bar, where tranquillity really is the key word. Whether you gather on bar stools around a barrel table or pull up some floor cushions, the low light and exotic tunes will have you relaxed in no time at all. The bar closes around midnight, so get in early to make the most of your night.
Diners should ensure that they are able to sit on the floor for an extended period, and ladies, remember you’ll be getting up and sitting down a few times, so dress accordingly! A romantic dinner destination and a great place to visit with a group of friends, Garuva is a perfect place for a night of socialising.
